841 Starter used to not totally engage when starter button pressed. I disassembled it and found all teeth present on the drive and flywheel. I replaced the drive (bendix)and now Starter won't turn. I can turn it by hand. I have had it apart, so am familar with the insides. Anything, I can look for, clean, adjust, repair, before I bite on a refurbished one. Thanks.

The bendix probably got rotated that it is in the engaged position. You must take the starter back out and hold the bendix housing against a bench grinding wheel and when it is turning at a fast enough rpm it will go back together.

Is there any way to return the bendix to the unengaged position, without taking it off the starter. I understand it has to spin fast enough to disengage but I really am green about all the pieces on the end of that starter motor. Any pictures or diagrams out there. I have read on this forum about a pin that gets presses to release the bendix. Can someone explain where that pin is located. Thanks Scott for the start.

Try putting the trans. in high gear and rocking the rear wheels back and forth so it turns but you probably have to take it off. Don't be afraid to push the bendix housing (not the end with the pin in) against the grinder hard it won't hurt a thing.

a wire wheel is the thing to use, and it's easier if you put the starter in a vise, and use a (big) hand held grinder. however, this won't fix the fact that your starter won't turn electrically.
