Is there an upside or downside to going to a 17 GPM pump on a front loader? The loader will be used daily and speed is a plus. I have noted that most sold are 13-15 gpm pumps. Just want the board's views.

Thanks in advance.

The horsepower required to attain full pressure will be proportionaly higher. 17 gpm requires 20hp at 2000 psi. It will definatly slow a tractor engine down.

Your questions and information are great. Do not have the answers on size, engine rpm's etc but will get it. I had the lift cylinders rebuilt recently. Do not think it should be a difficult job to measure diamener and stroke. The tractor will be picking up tree tops (limbs), wood chips, butt cuts, logs etc up to about 2000 pounds. It will be in actual service 20-25 hours a week. A storm is blowing through now however I should have the information by tomorrow evening. The pump on the tractor when I bought it appears to be about 4-5 GPM according to a mechanic friend. Thanks again.

The GPM's are rated at a certain speed. Are the GPM's of the pumps you are looking at rated at the same speeds?

Do a little thinking. How large (bore and stroke) wise are your cylinders? How fast do you want the cylinders to fully extend? Next how fast do you want to run the tractor engine when you do use the loader. Once you have that it is no problem to calculate what GPM you need. also remember all pumps are rated on theoretical displacement. Your actual flow (GPM's) will be from 10 to 15% less. More questions? J.

All the loaders I have on my tractors have 8-10 GPM pumps on them and they do just fine. A little bit slow in the winter but I can pick up a 2000-2500 lbs hay bale with the one on my 841

The higher GPM can get a person in to trouble fast. Slow going up believe me is good. If a loader goes up to fast it can lead to a flipped over tractor. Getting a heavy load up in the air fast can over center you so fast you don't know what happened till its over on its side and that can happen in a split second and its no fun to be on a tractor that is flipping over

It's hard to steer with a round bale in your lap.
