My 860 gas is very loud and powerful. I retarded the timing a small amount and it sounds much better, turns over better, and still has more power than I really need. What kind of problems (If any), will this action create?

By retarding the timing the spark is coming sooner. This should reduce your available fuel/air mixture which will decrease power. Should also make engine run cooler. If it seems to be starting better the timing may have been advanced by a previous owner. Or it may be one of those engines that just just need to be a little warly. Most of the Ford 390's (automobile) I've worked on needed to be advanced to where they are hard to start to get max power. Bottem line; a little change that doesn't affect operation should not cause long term damage. Timing too advanced is another story. Pre-igninition knock can break pistons.
