1996 Model 1715. I had problems with the starter not engaging, got that checked out, and replaced the battery. Now, sometimes, the idiot lights will come on, but nothing will happen when I go to start it, or preheat, in fact the lights will go out. More often, the one light will glow slightly when the key is in run, but goes out whenever I change key positions. I've cleaned the ground to the frame, and done a conductivity check. What can I check on the timer module (the one that kicks out the preheat after xx seconds? Other thoughts? Thanks.

Once you have checked the crounds and both terminal clamps.. check your fuse box for any blow fuses, as well as the incoming power line feeding the fuse block. have you checked your switch, to see if it is sending power tot he correct contacts when turned? and if so, how far does that power get ( interlocks? ).. etc.

post back.

All fuses checked good. I followed the power to the switch, through the contact for the run terminal, into the fuse block, and the one lead back to the instrument panel, not sure where the other one goes. I don't get any power to the pre-heat coil on the panel. I got full 12v at the panel once, but that went away when I tried to start it. Now just the trickle voltage. I check the relay coils as well, and that gave me some resistance across the coil, but I don't know if the power is getting that far.

If you have no power to the glowplugs or the indicator coil, the main components are the fusible link (at the + post of the starter solenoid) and the ignition switch. No relays involved. As far as cranking is concerned, the neutral safety switches (2) provide the ground path for the (yellow in color) safety circuit relay coil.

I don't see anything that looks like a fusible link on the + side of the starter, is it integral to the starter? There is a wire connector, but it looks like a normal connector, no links. New battery, and other than a continuity check, I'm not sure how to check the ignition switch. Thanks for the help!

The fusible link is a red wire about 3" long. One end has a ring terminal attached to the solenoid along with the positive battery cable. The other end has a spade connector in a white plastic housing.

OK, then that is there. How does it fail?

Age, Heat, Sustained amperage load near its design capacity. Amperage load above its design capacity. Same things that damage other parts of any electrical circuit.

Sounds like you are reading voltage but some part of the circuit won't handle any current load. Could be a bad battery cable, ingition switch, or fusible link, or a poor battery. I find a $30 hand held battery load tester to be an excellent tool for testing battery cables and cable connections.

Harbor freight has sales on the carbon pile hi capacity load testers once in a while... cheap money usually for a 500a tester...
