Ford 3000 diesel engine rebuild / noise

Have a metalic squeal from the front of the engine. Only seems to happen after a few minutes of warm-up time. Bits of tiny iron/steel in the front of the oil pan. Can the pistons be removed/replaced from the bottom of the engine or MUST the head be removed?

If the crank is removed, the pistons can be removed from the bottom.. Problem is, the head has to come off to re-install the pistons..

You will be better off to remove the head instead of the crank..
With metal in the oil pan, I'd say you may have a bearing problem on a main or rod on the crank..

Forgot to add that I already removed the belt to isolate the water pump and generator. The noise persisted, so it is not the water pump or generator. Pan is already off. It looks like removing the crank will allow the pistons to be removed from below w/o pulling the head. The bits of metal were only on the front (shallow) part of the pan; there were none under the gears along the front part of the block. They may have been there awhile, I don't know.

I"ve seen this happen when someone installed an oil galley plug with silicone rubber as sealant. Obviously got a little too much and blocked the oil hole that fed the main bearing.

If you're removing pistons then the head must come off along with the pan...

Where are these bits of iron/steel? In the oil or around the crank pulley?
Most squeals in those engines are related to a bad water pump or bad generator. Check that first...

Yes, I noted in a follow-up that I had taken the water pump and generator OUT of the equation by removing the belt - noise still present.

Metal bits are at the front of the oil pan, no metal detected on/under the pulley or the gear behind it.

I was hoping for actually useful help here....

Tear it apart and find the problem. A head and upper gasket set is going to run you under 100 bucks from NH and will probably reveal more about that engine that digging in the bottom...
You basically can't remove the crank from those engines without a split. It's far easier to just haul the engine out, tear it down on the floor and deal with it. Crank seal is one piece lip seal set in the rear main cap.... which has wedge seals on the sides. Not something I'd want to attempt 'in-frame'.

If you've got metal in the pan, you've got big problems. Are you sure it's not piston related? Of all the Ford's that I've had apart or seen apart, all had piston issues and broken rings. Bottom end issues don't seem to develop so often until the whole engine is very advanced in life... The pistons go first. Pop the lid off and look at the top end, and don't forget to get the head done while you're rebuilding the rest.
