Good Morning all,

Another single digit temp this morning, I'm ready for a thaw and some spring weather, shouldn't be long. My proofmeter had seized on me so I took it apart and have now cleaned up the "drive shaft" where the problem was and it spins nicely. I am left with roughly 1/32" to 3/64" difference from the drive radius to the "carrier" radius. Any opinions on what to lubricate with. It appears to have had some type of grease or oil originally, but I didn't know if I may be better off w/ graphite after my work. Graphite, lithium, 3 n 1, or a more typical grease?. Shouldn't be much dust get to it after it's together, but there is always that chance. All opinions appreciated.

Chris

What ever you use, clean the old lubricant off , thoroujhly. Sometimes when old grease is mixed with new grease, it will harden up and not lub .

I have used modern grease, white lube, and wd40..

remember that graphite and water dont mix. graphite based products will cause servere coorosion on any adjacent metal products.

older grease products were waxed based and would eventually harden up.. modern grease products will not wax up but will change in vicosity as the temperature drops, but not nearly as bad as the older parafin based products. The new products are made to be pliable in sub zero temps.

so just pick a modern synthetic grease product and go crazy...

Thanks Guys,

I hope to get it back together and on the tractor this weekend. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks again.

Find some LSA military gun oil. its sticky so it stays put on moving parts.Dont use wd 40 it leaves a gummy residue behind when it evaporates.

I must have broken my cable yesterday. It was very cold and when the tractor started the meter started to go nuts.
