The 850 ran great when I plowed my drive. Loaned it to my broinlaw and it ran great. The It happened. It will start and idle but the moment one drives it up a hill or idels it up it dies.

Could not even go up a hill in 1st gear. Towed it home.

What gives? Full tune up buy a guy who knos what he is doing. New voltage reg., new plugs, new wires, new points. Fires on the first turn of the crank and idles. I susspect some junk in the fuel line, tank or carb. There was some stuff that looked like sand in the bowl. Is this just a case of old gas tank with chunks.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Andy

My 850 did almost the exact same thing this fall. It had been running fairly well, but then started the exact same symptoms. It would start and idle fine, but had no power. Wouldn't pull itself across level ground.

I tried spraying carb cleaner into every hole I could find in the carb, but nothing helped. I believe it was a gent named Dave on this discussion board who told me a carb rebuild kit would probably solve my problems, and he explained what was probably happening. The kit took care of my problem. It's run fine ever since. I did soak the disassembled carb overnight in carb cleaner before installing the kit.

Had the same problem on my 64' 4000 4 cyl (same tractor as yours, only painted blue and made later). There was a fuel screen in the bottom of the fuel tank which was clogged. I found it easiest to drain fuel, remove the valve cover (2 nuts), then remove the fuel on/off switch, which has the screen attached to it. Just be sure to cover your engine head so gas doesn't run into oil.

I cleaned mine with 90% Iso. Alcohol (rubbing, not Golden Grain), but carb cleaner might work better.

Be sure to also check the screen in the top of the fuel filter bowl. That one was also clogged on mine.

Good Luck!

This has been a pretty common complaint on this board. Your guess is probably correct, it is most likely starving for fuel. If you haven't installed a fuel filter (and it is now clogged), then it is probably gunk in the bottom of the tank plugging up the screen.

You might get by cleaning it out with some laquer thinner. Disconnect the line from the carb so none gets into the engine, and let it flow until clean.)

You might also check your gas cap to make sure the vent holes are open try running tractor with cap loose to be sure it isn't developing a vacuum lock. Also check to be sure you don't have water or ice developing in tank and fuel lines. Use a flashlight to check for debris in your tank.
