This is my first 3pt tractor and I haven't seen any other Ford 4000's so don't know if my tractor is messed up or not. When nothing is on my 3pt the right lift arm will bump against the tire. The chains on the lift arms are mounted on the outside of the arms, so they prevent the arms from swinging in, but not out. A manual picture I've seen shows the chains mounted on the inside to prevent the arms from swinging out. Makes sense to me.

So my question is why are my chains mounted on the outside? Is this correct on any of the 4000's? Mine is a made in England version if that makes any difference.

After reading the above, and not seeing just what you have for your 3 pt set up,,, IS it possiable that;

1) your right tire/rim is mounted closer to the inboard side (they're adjustable)

2) part of your 3 pt is bent.

3) a combination of both?

..sl

P.S. Soundguy, didn't your 5000 have the flat top fenders? and, What no mud where you live? :D

We have a UK made 500 and the lift arms are set like the picture Soundguy posted. The chains are reversible and someone may have done that over the past 40 years that tractor has been around to use them as sway chains instead. If you don"t have the center attach bracket over the drawbar, you can probably pick one up at a salvage yard.

Thats the way the 3 pt's are set up on UK Ford tractors, with the check chains on the outside. There should be smaller chains on the inside of the arms with a spring that you hook them together with. The spring usually gets busted off pretty quickly, so most arms end up tied together with baler twine etc. There are probably two small brackets about half way up the inside of the arms where the chains were fixed to.

Chris,

Thanks! Having a UK built Ford makes it a bit more challenging for me as most of the manuals are for the American built versions.

I do use a bungee cord at the present time to keep the arm from hitting the tire.

Untill you put an implement on.. get a 1$ bunji cord and connect the lower lift arms together..

Here's a pic of my 5000. a little bigger than your 4000.. see the chains onthe inside. Since this pic I have also added check chains from the under axle brackets over to the lift arms.. etc.

There are more pics of it in the archives, and it has been in a couple magazines.. including a cover shot int he January tractor shop magazine.

It's a decent 5000..

It started off as a project for a 'parade piece'.. then it turned into the annual hay-ride puller.. Now it has been pressed into 'backup' mowing tractor pulling a 10' mower.

Works great... I really love the machine..

I kept them and used them to attach the chains to.

Put a drawbar between the lift arms.

George, the tractor can be set up with the sway chains in either location. They can be swapped to the inside. You may need to buy another chain kit to do that however.
