Good evening friends,

I've been working on getting gauges back on my tractor and wanted to provide an update. I was disappointed with the oil gauge kit from this site, had to get a larger line and couple of fittings. New proofmeter cable also from this site seems to be working well and temp gauge from TSC is working.
I had put the new proofmeter cable on a couple of weeks ago and happily put a few tenths of an hour on the proofmeter before it seized due to dirt, etc. where the cable attaches to the proofmeter. After finding it seized and figuring I didn't have anything to lose, I tore into it. I got it back together this weekend and on the tractor. So far it seems to be operating nicely.
Most exciting was to see the oil pressure on this tractor for the first time in 25+ years since it's been in my family, 50 psi cold. Looking forward to see how it does once it warms up.

Last indicator I need now is a light in my charging system which I am going to go ahead and do now, because I fear my genny isn't charging like it should.
Working on old steel has its ups and downs, I had an up weekend. Following are photos of the proofmeter parts, partially constructed, and in the tractor. Thanks to all who have helped me through this board.
I actually have a series of photos for the whole proofmeter construction that I hope to put together for anyone else interested in it. New proofmeters run $50-$100 and all are apparently China built, so quality is questionable. If you can rebuild the original for $10 and time, why not?

The metal ring that holds the glass in is "folded" over the lip of the "cup" that hold the proofmeter. I just took a screwdriver and pryed the lip up and then used pliers to bend it up a little more. After going all the way around, you will be able to work the metal ring off. The glass is sealed to the cup and you will want to be careful in removing it as not to break it. I used a utility knife to separate it from the "cup" or housing. If you then take the two screws out of the back of the proofmeter, the whole thing should slide out. If you look under the face plate you will see the gears that should be driving the hour meter. The second picture provides a decent view of the large gear that is driven by a smaller gear to move the hour meter forward. I will try to get pics up for the whole process soon. Mine was seized, so I had nothing to lose, you will have to decide for yourself if it's worth the risk, but if you take it easy, there should be very little chance of damaging the working tachometer. Best of Luck.

If you do give it a try, choose a lubricant and do a little clean/lubricate while you have it out. Also, when you put it back together, use silicone or similar sealant to keep things a tight as possible. Some on the screws in the back, should be a cork gasket there as well, and of course, between the glass/housing.

I have a functional 4sp proofmeter with the face blackened from the sun. Did you replace the decal on the front or was your's good to go?

Anyone else know where the decals can be had?

jb

Hey JB,

Face plate was fine on mine, just cleaned it and the glass up a little as I put it back together. I know when I posted about working on my proofmeter others felt there were likely old proofmeters to be had if a person just asked. Probably pay minimal shipping and get an old one with a good face plate. Pretty nice community of folks here and with all the help you have provided, I am sure others would be glad to return the favor.

Is it on line somewhere?

Thanks for the nice comments guys. JB, I have 10-12 photos as I put each part back together. I always use photobucket but havn't played with it much. I will take a look and see if I can't put something together there and post the link, should be able to.
