Just out of curiousity, I am wondering how does a 1965 4400 ford compare to the SU? It has a 3 cyl. diesel, loader, heavy front axle.

Thanks

I'm not sure what year they started production of the 'SU', but I'd think it was probably 65 or 66. 'SU' refers to 'Special Utility' or it's often called 'Super Utility' around here. At any rate, the 4000 SU was nothing more than a standard 4000 AP which was fitted with the 3000's front axle. Basically you got a 4000 in a 3000 size package. There were no other differences that I'm aware of.

If a 4000SU has a 3000 front axle, could a 4000 axle be installed on a 3000? I believe the answer will be 'not worth the effort,' but I'm curious if it is possible.

I've never done that but I don't see why it couldn't be done. The better question is why would you bother? There again you would need to change out the axle, bolster, cowl and the ALL of the steering gear. It is a heavier axle, but not sufficiently heavier to make a change worthwhile in my opinion. If you need a heavy axle you would go with one of the industrial variants that was made for the 3000 and that would minimize the other things you would need to change. An axle from a 3400 or 3500 would be the ticket there.

Dave the SU had the same 52 Hp that the other 4000's did.The SU has a 3000 front axle.Heavier axle on plain 4000 is better if you are wanting a loader tractor.

"Doesn"t the SU have the heaver rear axle housing?"
The same rear axle as the all purpose 4000. The 4000SU has a 3000 front bolster, shell, and front axle, as well as smaller rear rubber. It's not a 3000 with a bigger motor, it's a 4000 with a different front axle. Independent PTO and wet brakes just like a 4000AP.
