Good evening friends,

I posted a few pics of my proofmeter repair Monday and Johnbud indicated he was interested in seeing them all. This is my first attempt at sharing a photo album (23 photos in all).

I don't know the proper names of the different pieces, so I call them what I think they should be called. Hope it isn't too confusing.

I didn't start photos until I had the proofmeter apart. The "primary shaft" is retained in the proofmeter by sliding through the "housing" and then a brass keeper is slid on the the end of the shaft and the shaft flared. I demoed the brass keeper with a drill and the flared end of the primary shaft with a pair of pliers. It would be best to grind the flared end. I had to drive the shaft through the body which damaged the "carrier" where the shaft rides some. I think it cleaned up pretty well, but if I had it to do over, I would grind the flare off. Make sure you don't grind more than necessary though, as you need to have the end of the shaft protruding to epoxy a fabricated keeper when putting back together. There were some small rivets etc. that had to be carefully drilled as well. I epoxied all the spots previously held with rivets, "buttons", etc.

Finally, the link should take you to the album. If you click on a photo it will provide the photo in full size and I have also provided a small description/comment that should be at the bottom of each photo.

I put this together with a standard dial up connection, but it may be pretty slow for some, don't know.

Nice job. I tried to rebuild my proofmeter, but the needle spring was wrapped around the axle. Totally destroyed due to the internal clutch locking up from moisture/corrosion.

Anyone have any broken proofmeters for sale cheap?

I hope it holds up for you.

How many hours did it take to complete overall?

Congratulations.

Thanks,
I didn't keep perfect track, but probably had 6-8 hours total in project. I probably had about the same in uploading photos and organizing. I wish some of the photos had been a little clearer. Glad you enjoyed it. :D
