Is a 3000 gas enough HP to run a small square baler like a new holland 69? Also do they use alot of gas? Going to look at one what else should I look for? Thanks

If you look in older operators manuals, they would tell you how many plow bottom tractor you would need to pull, or run that piece of equipment. A baler i think at one time called for a 2 plow tractor. That was simpler, because the buyer or owner didn't have to guess weather or not he had enough HP to run that piece of machenery.

I have run square balers (12x16x36) with 2000 4 sp trannies with tranny driven pto and the 3000's with the 2x4 with live pto. Both will operate the baler and do what you want.....except the tranny will drive you into the pond on a down slope if you don't have an overrun clutch. Would recommend against anything but a live or independent pto for baler operation.

Balers don't take a lot of hp to operate. The flywheel does the work, all you have to do is to keep it spinning.

Ford tractors are noted for their economy, and obviously the diesel is more efficient than the gas. If I didn't have fuel gauges I would be running out of fuel periodically as I would forget to fill them up.....takes a long time to use a tank of fuel.

I should have said that is what the ford dealer told us on our 1973 3000 3cyc. that we own. Sam

We used a 1957 JD 420 to pull a New Holland 68 hayliner for several years. Didnt pull wagon behind though. Going down a small slope it would push the tractor a little but it was what we had and it worked for us. We did a lot of custom baleing so we wasent always on level ground. On the 3000 ford if it has the orginal carb on it there is a good chance that the carb. will have a dead spot in it. When you try to speed the eng. up it will cough and miss and hesitates a little which can be anoying. The carbs have a vacum advance and they were troublesome when they were new. To fix the problem with the carb is a replacement carb acording to the Ford tractor dealer. The dealer cant seem to get parts for the vacum advance, no longer available. Hope this helps. Sam

Anderson:

It depends almost entirely upon the transmission.

Some 3000s were installed with a 4 speed transmission without live PTO.

I have operated one of these tractors, and found it to be the highest geared (low gear) tractor that I have experienced.

I would not want to try to operate a PTO driven baler with a 4 speed version.

It should handle a small square baler OK in most conditions if it has the 4x2 transmission with live PTO or the S-O-S transmission with independent PTO.

Years ago, we had a Ford 2000 gas, probably early 70's model, and a MF 135 diesel. We baled with a Ford 530 baler. We prefered the Massey for the baler since it was heavier, more fuel efficient, and had slightly more HP, but the 2000 did just fine with it.

I have a 801 gas and a IH 440 baler and I have no problem pulling it. I drop the bales on the ground and most of the time I can run in 2nd gear if the windrows are not too big.

Yes, it will run the baler just fine. I wouldn't want to go dragging much of a wagon around with it, but if you drop the bales on the ground it will run that baler quite fast.

FWIW, type "1965 Ford 3000" into the Tractor Photos link at the left side of this web site and look for the pix from JAE-TX. Note that it looks to be flat ground and not sure if a wagon is hooked to the baler.

What about the transmission? I have a 2000 gas (134 CID) with a 4 speed. Not near enough tractor. I use a 62 hp Case/IH for bailing but a 50 or so would work. I know the 4000 is a 172 CID but not sure about the 3000 (probably a 134). If it has an 8sp trans you might be able to get by, but I would think it would be marginal.

You are refering to the older 4 cyl machines produced pre 1965.

The newer 2000/4000 went to 3 cyl.. and the 3000 was always 3 cyl... etc. 158ci / about 47 eng hp.. etc.
