Could you fellows tell me what wt. oil is used in a 73 4000 8/2 transmission?

I have the part # that ford gives but I would like to be able to buy the oil at costco or some other place.

Thanks for your help.
Charlie

I think part of the reengineering of these tractors for the '65 model year (which included the cylinder reduction from 4 to 3) included combining the hyd and diff systems into one sump. With that came 134 combination hydraulic/transmission fluid which they used in the separate tranny sump also.

Prior to that it was heavy-thin-heavy (tranny-hyd-diff)in the 3 sumps.

On my tractor the rear end plug is in a little different position than what the owners manual showes. The plug that is on my tractor is a square head plug located in fornt of the rear brace for the right hand running board. The book shows the plug located more to the rear..

How do you know how full to fill it? My 1965 4400 has no dipstick, just a plug to unscrew. Both for the tranny, & the rear end. Do you fill them up till you see fluid? or is there some other way? I have no manual for this tractor. Thanks in advance.

Fill each housing till it runs out the check plug on the side.

I've been using the walmart UTF oil in my larger tractors for a while now.. and before that used TSC's utf with no problem.

Ford/NH 134D is the correct oil. Any other oil meeting that spec will suffice. Walmart's TDH is but one example. You can also use 80W90 gear oil but it will tend to shift harder, especially in cold weather. I'd use 134D.
