Good evening friends,

The last couple of times I have run the 1960 971, if the tractor died, the battery would be discharged, even though it had just started the tractor 30 minutes ago. After looking through the owners manual and studying some archived posts, I decided to start by replacing the missing charge indicator light to help me.
If any of you read my posts from the last couple of weeks, I lamented the oil pressure guage I had purchased. I had to get a larger line, fittings yada, yada, yada. At any rate, I looked for a DB-17-20 socket for my charge indicator light without luck. Found one site on the web and pricy ($20). As it works out, the light provided for the oil gauge was the perfect size. With a little modification, some wire and soder, I've converted it to two wire and used it. Nice when it works out that way.

At any rate, I put the light on this evening. One wire to "arm" and the second wire to the samll bat post of the starter relay switch (4 post relay). John's wiring diagrams and the owner's manual show a "termial" block. I'm not sure what I'm looking for there, but don't think there is one on this tractor, I may be showing my ignorance here. The battery feed for the coil is pulled from the same place as I pulled for the charge light.

Key on - light bright

start tractor - light still bright

I then reread some genny tests and tried to "motor" the genny by jumpering bat to fld and then bat to fld&arm. Plenty of spark, but the genny never spun. I then put the belt back on the genny and cleaned the connections. Start tractor and jump bat to arm to try and extinguish the charge light. The light went out. I don't think I jumped to fld, but may have as quarters are tight and visibility poor.

Finally, if I now turn the key on I get a bright light. Start tractor, and light goes out. Started a couple of times and the light goes out as if the genny is charging. Should I put some hours on it and see what happens or am I missing something here. I apologize for the novel and lack of clarity, it is a little late and I'm still learning.

TIA
Chris

hi Chris,

As old as your tractor is, the terminal block may have been deleted, but it surely would need something in its place. It is up under the dash. The two wires from the key switch should go to it. One side should be hot all the time and the other hot when the ignition switch is turned on. The coil feed should come from the keyed side.

Good morning fellas,

Thanks for the responses. Larry, my wife thinks I'm crazy sitting up late once in a while, you must not require very many ZZZZZ's. Oh well, all the better for me, I get magical info. while I sleep :D :D
Two wires from back of ignition switch, one red, one yellow. Both tie into the wiring harness in short order. I would guess it must be an aftermarket wiring harness as the spots it joins in looks similar to a fuseable link, fat insulated area, maybe three times dia. of wire. As stated in first post, power to dist. and charge light both coming from small bat post on starter relay (solenoid).

I also tried a voltmeter at the battery with the tractor running. Even at the battery, it jumped around alot. 9.5V, 10.6V,12.5V. Didn't even respond part of the time, presumably from jumping around so much. I had the genny rebuilt around 18 years ago and the tractor has never had a charge light in the 25+ years my dad and I have owned it. I was greener then than now (somehow) and honestly doubt I ever polarized the genny, sure don't remember it if I did. As soon as the tractor starts the charge light extinguishes, even at low RPM. Two good weekends in a row is too much to ask for, but I hope that's the case.

Thanks again for everything guys.

Chris

It sounds as if your genny was not charging because it was not polarized correctly.
Since the light goes out now you most likely touched the right two wires together in those tight quarters.

If you have a small hand held volt meter you can check that it is really charging by reading the battery voltage with the motor running at med idle.
If you do not have a meter I would let it go a few days to see what is happing but it sure sounds like it is charging now.
