I recently bought an old Ford backhoe. Would like to positively identify so I can order repair manual and parts. It appears to be either a 2000 or 4000 tractor from '62-'64 with Ford loader and Wain Roy hoe. 4 cyl. Shermon high/low 4 spd trans. A number from upper right corner of trans reads as follows; NCA-12517-S-A. Can anyone help me pinpoint just what I have? Thanks

Well I scrubbed the serial # area and I found the other 2 digits as well as the first diamond. Badly corroded. First # appears to be a 5. Second either a 6 or 8. Suffices to put me in 1964. This correspond to date on top of radiator,7/64. Thanks for all the help!

Here's some great info. on your Sherman. I'll pass on an important note given to me by John_Bud, NEVER shift the Sherman tranny while the tractor is moving!!

Well, for one thing you have the wrong side of the tractor for the model # !

If you squat down on the left side of the tractor and put your left hand on the starter and your right hand on the clutch peddle - right in front of you is a bulgy area where the starter attaches and the flat spot on top of that has the model number and serial number.

(Credit to Old for the description !)

Thank you all for the ID link. The model # is 41300S. Thus it is a 4000 series built after 8/62. An industrial model. 4 spd trans without PTO. I'm not sure what the S stands for. Maybe Shermon Trans? The serial# is a little confusing. It reads "132" with a square turn 45 degrees. Should I assume that means 1320?

Yes the S stands for factory installed sherman trans.

You may have to wire brush the area down clean to make out the rest of the numbers. The 45 degree square is called a diamond and it signifies the start and end of the serial number. So, the last 3 digits are known, there is at least 1 more digit, probably 2.

1962 started at SN 1001
1963 started at 11948
1964 started at 38931
