I found a very nice 800 diesel, for a very nice price. Runs like new. But I have herd from some people that they were the worst engines ford ever made. And one person told me he had one that ran forever. Any one have any advice on this?? Thanks!!

I've got the 144 in my 671D and parts are hard to find. I have heard from a feller that buys, fixes up and sells a lot of 8/9n's that the 172 engine is a good one with a lot of parts available still except to say that if you grind the crank at rebuild it made them real weak and prone to breaking, i checked with NH and a new crank is around 1500 bucks. just my .02, Kent S. in KS.

If it starts easy buy it. They are great and you will really notice the differance in fuel consumption.

The 172 diesel is a decent engine. Decent power, decent parts availablity, easy to work on, decent reliabilty. They use about 2/3 of to 1/2 of the fuel that a 172 gas engine will use.

If ether is used to start it, expect to pay about $2000-2500 for a total rebuild.

By the way, what's "bie" ?

First, there is no such thing as an 800 series Diesel- the diesel engine did not become available until 1958 and 801 series began in 1957.
Early 172 Diesels were prone to crankshaft breakage so a balancer was added which pretty well fixed that problem. Any 172 Diesel that is still running probably has the crank with the balancer.
I went to an auction this past Saturday and an 851D with Power Steering sold for $1500.

Man! I gotta hang out with you at auctions!

Last year this went for over $850 (no PS pump, no hydr pump, no hydr manifold, obvious missing parts

I bought a 951 Gasser at the auction for $700. It is missing the complete power steering system and the hood/grille assembly. It has the single front wheel so it steers easy enough without the PS. I was looking at the 851D and I got to talking to another guy who was looking at it. We agreed to not get into a bidding war with each other so he got the 851D for $1500 and I got the 951 for $700.

Boy! Both sound like great deals to me. I would be happy with a nice straight 900 fixer upper, but can't seem to find one around this part of KY.

The 172 diesels aren't too bad...they made it all the way to the early 4000 series..and you can still buy parts for them. The 144s on the other hand are hard to find parts for. I almost bought a 8x1 diesel tractor myself...until I saw the seller have to give it a snort of ether to crank it...I RAN away from that one. I'm still looking for another...would love to have a older ford diesel to run with my 8N.

While I hear the 144 diesels are a little spendy to get parts.. I've not seen many negatives posted around here about the 172's.
