Thanks to all for all the advice on the diesel engines! No here is the question. I found a NICE looking 961 Diesel with perfect tin, and the wide front. He says it runs great, but is hard to start when it is cold out. He said he tried to rewire, the glow plugs (I had no idea it had them). Said it makes no blue smoke at all. Rims and rubber are good. And he wants $3,500 for it. More than I wanted to spend but this looks very nice. The paint even looks nice. I really did not want one with the wide front, but I am sure I could sell it and swap it over, if I wanted to. Sound like it would be worth $3,500???

To give you an idea, I paid $2,500 for my 960 two years ago. It is gas, tin is fair, did not have a draw bar, grey paint was fair orignal, red was put on a second time with a brush, one back rim was fair the other was good, tires are good on back, fair on front.

I am very happy with it and think it was a fair deal.

Dave

Here is a link to the add. I decided to go with a very nice 801 I found. Sounds like some one should grab that 861 up. It is in the Cincinnati, OH area.

If it's in as good a shape as you make out, it should be worth 3500.

The glow plugs are available for about $35 each, but there are only 2. They run off of a relay like the starter and draw about 90amps. After 40+ years, they do go bad. The switch is a plunger that makes momentary contact when held down. Maybe has a bad switch?

But, the 172D is not a good cold weather starter in general. Make sure the timing is at 23 degrees (older ones were timed at 18 and were harder to start due to that). Then add a block heater. A stout battery, 30-60 min with the block heater and 30 seconds of glow time will make 0F starting pretty easy. I have fired it up at -20F, but that was 3 hours of block heater time! Brrr.

You should be able to swap the wide front for the narrow as more people want wide.

Hay JB,
What type of block heater do you use with yours? One that goes in the hose, or in the plug hole? Thanks!
