fan belt length?

Good evening friends,

The fan belt on my 971 broke last weekend. After checking the length, I got one just a little shorter (assuming the old one was stretched). The old belt measured just under 41", I got a 40" belt and it is too short. Does anyone know off the top of their head if I would be better off with a 41" or 42". This tractor still has the stock genny on it. I'm leaning towards 42", but thought someone might know. I looked in the owner's manual and read the passage about the fan belt, water pump, etc. but didn't see a length given. The 40" wasn't that close. Even with the genny pushed against the block, I was off by the full width of the belt. Thanks for reading and have a great evening.

Chris

awhtx,

By the way, I liked the photo of your new 951 trike. Your steering rod ?? (runs the length of the engine) looks to be bowed worse than mine. I'm pretty sure I can turn tighter to the right than the left due to the bow in mine. Have you ever taken some of the curve out to get one closer to original and if so, did you use heat or just grunt and muscle?? I know they originally had some curve, but over the years mine has gotten more bow, probably due to additional stress when the power steering failed and wasn't repaired (pretty sure Dad bought it that way).

Yes, the steering rod does seem to have excessive bow in it. I haven't had time to do anything with it yet. I didn't get it unloaded off my neighbor's trailer until Sunday evening and I just drove it home and parked it. I had to leave home Monday at 0430 to come to work and I'll get back home this evening and work on it some more. Since I have no intention of replacing the PS I will replace that steering rod with a straight piece. I have a lathe so I can cut and thread a replacement. It steered easy enough without PS.

Thanks awhtx,

I'm dealing with O'Reilly's and I'm sure the return won't be a problem. Just trying to get the right one the second time to save another trip.

Most auto parts stores I have dealt with (Auto Zone, NAPA, O'Reilly's) will let you return unused parts. Buy a 41" and if it doesn't fit take it back and trade it for a 42". Or buy both belts, take them home and find the one that fits and then return the other for a refund.
