Can anyone out there help me identify what year this tractor is? I believe its an 800,that is on the left side just fwd of the rear axel, and it is a diesel 4 cylinder, and has 4 fwd and 1 reverse gears,I thought that my grandfather said it was a 56' but I was just a kid and dont rmember for sure, I am getting ready to do some work on it and want to get the right parts and try be as true to its origins as posible.

The blue chassis and air cleaner would suggest to me that it's an 'early' 4000 built between 62 and 64. In addition, and for whatever reason, someone has installed the tinwork from an 800 series. The tin and grill look like an 800 series to me anyway...

I have a 1958 861D and the model and serial numbers are completely eaten away by battery acid. The casting dates on the engine, trans and rear axle trumpets are all 1958. Your tractor will be an 841D (4 speed trans). I believe the air cleaner on your tractor was not introduced until the early 60's. The original air cleaner for the diesels was located underneath the intake manifold and the air intake was located inside the louvered panel on the aft end of the left hood side panel.
It looks like you have the "cyclops" hood with the large round emblem above the radiator. This would be an 801 series. If you don't have the cyclops emblem you have an early 4000 which was basically the same as the 801. However, it appears your hood does not match the rest of the tractor so the date codes cast into your block, trans and axle are your best bet at determining year model.

Scrub down the flat spot just behind the starter. I have an 841D & it took a lot of wire brushing to make the sn viewable.

It is very common for battery acid to eat the model and serial # away on diesel engine tractors of this age. Look at the photo for referance and tell us what #'s your tractor has and we may be able to narrow down the year.

It is not a 800 for sure. They did not have diesel engines. It is a 601; 801; 2000; 4000. More likely a 2000 or a 4000 by looking at that air cleaner.

It could be anywhere from 57-65. The 4 cylinder diesels started in 1957 with the 6x1 and 8x1 and also the early 2000 and 4000 series and made it until the 3 cylinder diesels came out in the 2000 and 4000 series in 1965. With as much blue at there is on it, I would suspect an early thousand series...but it could be a repaint. Check out John Smith"s site for the way to decrypt casting numbers to help determin the year built.

Hope this helps some...

Look on the flywheel housing just to the rear of the starter, clean off the dirt and the serial number and model number should be there.
