Remounting Injector Pump on 1979 Ford 4600

The throttle shaft seal is gone on my injector pump. The pump leaks like a sieve. I want to remove the pump for repair. This requires taking off a a gear cover plate off the much larger timing gear cover. This allows me to get to three bolts that mount the pump timing gear to the pump shaft.

Question: How do I keep the timing gear in mesh after removing the pump? The small cover was obviously made to allow for easy pump removal. But the cover is too small to allow access to gear timing marks.

I replaced the injection pump on my '77 3600 & what I did was put a little "white out" mark where the gears where they meshed & left the gear for the pump sitting on the main gear after removing the three bolts. There is also a "key way" where the pump attaches to the pump gear so it was pretty simple. Do you have a manual to go by?

Also look at your timing marks on the pump housing so whe you put the pump back in you can align it back to the same spot it was before you removed it.

I of course do not have the CAV style pump.

The gear will sit there just fine. Just make sure that nobody bumps the engine over while the pump is off and don't drop the drive gear bolts down inside the front cover when you remove them...
Note the position of the pump mark relative to the engine adapter plate degree marks before removing the pump and you're good to go...

Thanks for the replies.

I have the CAV pump and it should have an index dowel between the gear and the pump. It looks like I can get to the front side by removing the upper radiator hose and the crankcase blow by tube.

I have the I&T Shop Service manual. It suggests the gear will stay in mesh provided the crankshaft isn't rotated after the pump has been removed.

Removing the main timing gear case cover appears to be a major job. The instructions call for removing the front tractor wheels. So I'm happy the smaller access cover was provided over the fuel pump timing gear.

Remove the lower rad hose and the shield in that area if it has one. I forget if I took the breather tube off last time or not... but definitely the lower rad hose, then remove the access cover. There's no need to remove the timing cover. It's a straight forward, simple job.

I had mine rebuilt last year and followed Rod's instructions to the letter for R&R. I believe that you can rotate the engine by hand to #1TDC and the marks on the pump and timing gear will line up before you take it apart. I used a quick shot of white paint also to be able to match the spray pattern if it did move. It was a piece of cake. Being uptight and hearing horror stories about dropping the bolts, I stuffed a rag between the gear and the front housing so if I dropped the bolts, they couldn't find the bottom of the engine. On mine, the breather tube was in the way too, like Rod suggested.
