Ok guys! I've run across one that stumps me. I've got a DDC SOS that's requiring the shifter to be in Neutral to crank, instead of Park. Without taking the top off (it's kinda buried on a Commander 6000) what the heck would put the safety start in the neutral position? Thanks!

[quote:ffd5cc548b]The safty start switch has the ball in the switch pushed by a lump on the shifter cam.

To work in neutral either the bracket holding the switch would have to move or the cam plate would have to move on the shifter shaft.[/quote:ffd5cc548b]

Yes that's how it operates. That's why I can't see how it can be doing what it's doing unless someone purposely ammended it. Thanks.

Chris,
This Commander 6000 only cranks in one position and it is at N. Sometimes I have to wiggle the shift lever to get it to crank in N. Either somebody's screwed with it or put it together wrong somehow.

Wayne, John Ia,

Grandpa had one of the first 871s in the country. I don't recall it ever being able to crank anywhere, but in Park. Course that was a long time ago. Thanks.

Larry,

My 901 only starts in park. Since mine works, I didn't look that close when I changed the transmission filter. I don't know about the 6000, but on my older unit (as I am sure you know), the starter button grounds through the control valve body when in Park only. Is nuetral the only other start location or will it try to start in gear also? If it's just starting in park and nuetral that would seem pretty lucky and not likely a problem. Please keep us posted if you delve into it further.

Chris

Same tranny as my 64 4000. Same tractor I had and sold to my brother. All these start in Park only. I don't know for sure, but I've never met an SOS that didn't need to be in Park to crank . . . until this one. Can't feature 'em putting a Neutral safety start on, if they're like this one. In cold weather anyway, as soon as tranny builds hyd pressure in N she wants to creep. Dangerous situation way she's wired.

The 6000 Owners Manual I have (Blue Cover) Page 9 says "IMPORTANT: The starting system is designed so that the starter motor can only be activated when the selector lever is in park. Turning the the key off (vertical) will stop the gasoline engine, but the fuel shut-off must be pulled to stop the diesel engine."

As a Ford tractor mechanic at a dealership(1957-1965) when the SOSs first came out, I seem to remember all SOSs would start in nuetral or park.

After rereading your post, I guess you don't care what (used to be). I don't have answer to your question, but I'll bet you don't take the top off to find out, beings it is a 6000 and it WILL start in neutral

Larry, It maybe that it has a nuetral safety switch like a car. with 2 start positions and one terminal is corroded or broke. A car will start in park or nuetral. And the 901 I had years ago would start in park or nuetral. I don't know it's just a guess. John

I don't have any 6000 manuals so my guess is that it came from the factory that way. Maybe there was something about that particular version of the SOS that requires starting in N rather than P.
