I got a nice 1958 961. Planing on repainting it when the weather gets warm (come on spring!). My question is should the hood say 901 or 961?? The hood still has the original lettering on it and it says 901. But it seams to me the one we had when I was a kid said 961 on it. I have done some looking and have found a lot of pic of original 961s with 901 on the hood. Any one know when witch would be correct?? Thanks!!

Hello 604 , The change over date is 1960 , you will see some early 1960 tractors with left over decals on them though . Thanks Tony Jacobs

It would be 961 before 1960. Ford realized that if they stopped putting specific model decals and started putting on generic series decals (ie, 901 instead of 941, 951, 961, 971, 981) they would spend less money on decals and dealers wouldn't have to stock as many replacement decals.

Thanks!
That is what I was hoping. It has 901 on it now, but they must have been replaced at some time. Now I just need some warm weather so I can put my wide front on and paint it! Thanks!!

You can barely make out "601" on my 1962 641 Workmaster (w/cab). I was wondrering why it said that and not "641"

As fordfarmer stated the early X01's had the full model number (941,951,961,etc) on the hood and at some point in production it was changed to just the series number (901). I don't recall who it was but someone has posted the exact changeover date on this website previously.

For what it's worth, my Grandpa's Work Masters had "641" on the hood.

901 is correct because its the series number. Model numbers where not put on the hoods. Or in other words they painted the hood for the series not the model it was

Only know what I've read here, and what my 971 had on the hood... Early x01's had the full model numbr on the hood (941, 951, 961, 971, 981...) Too many stickers to inventory, so bean counters said keep it simple- just use series number (501, 601, 701....) Hence, my '59 971 had "901" on it's hood. But I'd say it's a matter of choice, unless you're trying to be completely original.
