Well guys, to all of you who responded to my original post many thanks.

However, I've been studying service manuals and have verified what I thought I knew from the beginning. I've studied the 01 series ORC manual, the early DDC supplement and the 6000 manual (all original Ford manuals or reprints thereof). All three say there is a safety starter switch mounted to the control valve which prevents the engine from cranking unless the SOS transmission is in Park.
Now I'm more curious than ever to see how my Commander 6000 could crank in neutral and not in park. I've also been able to purchase a few NOS selecto parts. Among these are three camshafts and two complete comtrol valves that fit the SOS from '59 - 64 and the 6000. If anyone needs SOS parts . . .

Wayne IA - I'm betting you're gonna lose your bet!!!! It may not be today, but I'm gonna open this dude up and find out why it's cranking in the wrong selector position. I'll post my findings when I do so.

Mine won't crank at all----think we are both gonna find out what is in there and why it don't work---I've got grand kids around and its gonna be fixed
