Opened up the SOS on Commander 6000 this morning. Matter of fact need to get dinner yet because my curiosity just had to be satisfied.
Wire was broke off the safety starter switch. Guessing that's what you'll find too, Dave.
Dang thing was cranking in neutral because somehow one of the cams pinched the wire just right to ground the starter switch. Anyhow it has a bright shiny copper spot mid-wire and the break from the switch appears to be old. Could have just as easily cranked in any other spot the way it looked. It just happened to choose neutral.

Now if the safety starter switch is good.
Bet none of us would have chosen this finding in a million years.

I could tell from reading lots of your posts you would not let this thing ride without looking into it. Cause like me if it isn't right - it isn't right and drives one up a tree until the mystery is solved. Good catch and great thing to know about SOS. I have 5 of them and never would have thought about a broken wire getting caught up in a cam.

Likely fatigue and getting pulled on by the cams. Coating inside tranny was brittle and cracked.

Thanks for updating us Larry. Glad you found the problem and should be a pretty easy fix. Tractor Gods were being kind having it only start in nuetral. Your case points to the benefit of figuring it out and fixing it vs. "lettin it ride". Had to have been close to starting in gear as well. The first time can be the wrong time and someone get hurt or worse. Good work.

Chris

If the break was old , what would have caused it to break ? Bad connection on the switch itself ?Red
