The tractor is 12 volt. It has an ignition switch that starts in any gear. This seems dangerous to me both because of young people and older people (me) being forgetful. Is there a way to make this safer so it will only start in neutral or only when someone is seated like my lawn tractor?

As the others have said you most likely need to replace the starter relay because you have the wrong one installed. It is hard for us to relly KNOW because we do not know how your tractor is wired but most times that is the case.

Tou can start your education by reading This

Now we can do this 2 ways. We can make your tractor crank only when in netural; or we can make it crank only when the key is on and in netural. Your choice.

You can also check to see that your starter button on the trans still works. Take a ohm meter and put 1 wire on the starter button wire place and the other wire to ground. When you push the button down the ohm meter should go to "0".

You can keep the key switch you have we will just wire it differant for it to work right.

Once we have gone through all the parts and make sure they are correct and work you can then pick out the wiring diagram that fits your needs.

The Standard electric part # for the 3 post relay is SS558. This will allow you tractor to crank only in netural. I will have to get the part # for the 4 post relay that allows the tractor to only crank with the key on and in netural.

john in la - thank you so much. At present I am not sure which diagram pertains. I will look at the tractor this weekend. The odds are very good I will have more questions.

I just bought a 951 and someone had done the same thing- the original ignition switch had been replaced with an automotive type switch that uses the key to start the engine and the neutral safety switch on the trans had been eliminated from the circuit.
I bought an original style On/Off key switch at Tractor Supply and then I got an original style 4 post starter relay from O'Reilly's. Using john in la's wiring diagrams (which he graciously provides free of charge) I wired everything up (including the safety start switch).

 This is the one I used.... in reply to John in N.MN, 03-21-2008 06:24:13
This one is for use on the 801 series tractor with a GM 10si alternator conversion. The 10si is the most commonly used alternator on these conversions.

Hi John;

You are absolutley right, it is a dangerous thing. Removal of the key would be the first step! It's always a good idea to take the key out so no one monkey's with your tractor.

Has someone changed the ignition switch and bypassed the starter push switch assembly mounted on top of the transmission. This switch is designed to allow the starting of the tractor in neutral only. You need to find out if it has been bypassed.

If it has not been bypassed and you have the original ignition switch, then I'd say the push switch needs to be replaced.
