Jubilee won't turn over - motor locked up??

I drove my tractor the other day and shut it down afterwards. Went out yesterday and the solenoid clicks but it won't turn over. Tried jump starting it (has been converted to 12v), even put the positive cable directly on the terminal of the starter, lots of sparks, but still no joy. Tried pull starting it in 4th, but would just skid the tires when the clutch was released. Any suggestions?

#1 check the oil and make sure its not real low or over full. If its over full smell it to see if it smells of gas. If it does smell like gas pull the plugs and then try to turn it over. You might have a float problem in the carb and have a cylinder or 2 full of gas and it will not turn over if that has happened. you will also need to change the oil if that happened. Also you need to maybe pull the starter off and make sure the bendex gear didn't lock up on the flywheel

I did check the oil and pull the plugs but it still wouldn't turn over. Tried to remove the starter but couldn't get it out. Removed the bolts and the starter will twist, but not come out. Is there some trick to it?

Sounds like the starter gear is jammed on the flywheel ring gear and it may take some tapping and or prying to get it out. Or if you can get hold of the bolt that holds the crank pulley on and turn it back wards of what the engine turns the jammed gears might pop loose

Does the starter pull straight out, or do you need to lift/tilt it in some way? What about giving the tractor a tug backwards with it in one of the forward gears to pop the gear loose?

The starter will pull straight out, but as it is heavy it tends to be nose high. I think there may be 3 bolts - you did get them all, right?

Not that I have any (cough) personal experience (cough) trying to get out a stuck something only to break it at the remaining bolt (ahem - no, not me!).

The 3 bolt removal was the easy part. I can tap a screwdriver between the starter and the block and pry the starter away about 1/4 inch, but it pulls right back when I remove the screwdriver. I've even tried tapping on the starter while prying with the screwdriver. I also tapped on the ears of the starter and rotated it around to where the bolt holes lined up with the next hole, thinking maybe it needed to rotate out somehow, but it still won't come out. Since I've never pulled the starter on this before, I don't know what it looks like inside the flywheel area to even speculate on what it may be hanging up on. Any thoughts?

Yep you got your self a stuck starter gear and the reason if pulls back in is the bendex has a spring on it and your pulling on that spring. You might be able to jack up one tire and then put it in the highest gear and rock the tire back and forth and it might pop loose. If not you may have to remove the bolts that hold the starter together and take the starter apart so you can hold the armature and turn it by hand to unlock that jam

I would jack up one wheel , put it in high gear and try to rock the tire back and forth watching the fan to see if it turns.

Pryed and "tapped" on the starter and it finally broke free so I could remove it. Couldn't find anything wrong/stuck on it, but lubed the shaft and reinstalled it. Works great!

Thanks for all the help!!
