The exhaust needs replaced on my new 851. The end of the pipe is near my left foot. Feels good in the winter but will be unbearable this summer! The parts section sells a vertical pipe. Other then having to put a can over it at the end of the day, they look like they would be better. Has anyone used these?

Thanks for the tips. I do use my tractor for mowing under trees, so therefore it looks like it would be best for a horizontal exhaust.

Think long and hard before you put a vertical exhaust on a gas motor. There is a reason diesels can have a vertical exhaust and gas should not.

It is called benzene poisoning.

If the discharge location is the only issue, I would think you could go to a local auto parts store and for very small $$ you could get an adapter, elbow, short piece of pipe, etc and discharge behind your feet or to the side and still keep the exhaust is it is. That said, all of my tractors discharge straight up, and I have broken mufflers off on tree limbs.

Bob;

I use horizontal exhausts on all of my vintage Fords that I use for mowing so that I can drive under tree limbs without worrying about the stack.

I have a vertical exhaust on my 961 because I do not mow with this tractor.

The vertical exhaust is a bit less expensive.

My 950 and 640 both had vertial mufflers . As long as you aren't going to be doing any work where they'll get clobbered and bent (or crack you manifold!), you should get along fine. Definatly get a raincap so you don't have to remember to put a can over the muffler. I've seen 2 types - ones that use a curved pipe after the standard under-the-gas-tank muffler, and others that use a curved pipe from the manifold elbow and ahve the muffler vertical. I prefer the standard type muffler with just the pipe being vertical.

I was making a orchard tractor and wanted a under the floor plate exhaust. You can get the lower muffler and pipe system just look at some different models with the same engine. I have the SOS tranny and had to take the pipe to a muffler shop and have kick put in it to go around that lower valve block on the tranny. It worked just fine then. bjr

My FE35 Ferguson (bad word on this forum) smoked so bad when I used the snowblower on it; that I had to switch it to the vertical exhaust. You can only inhale so much diesel smoke.
PS, Use a rain cap on the stack, and forget about the can.
Post a picture, as we always like to see other peoples toys - OOPS I mean tractors!
