There are 3 lugs on my generator. One on the end and two on the side. They are not marked, or if they are I can't read what they are. I need to know what each one is. I'm trying to get it to charge and want to do some tests. ( I saved one of Soundguys posts). Also if the reg. is bad where do I get one. I can buy a new gen. on this site, but didn't see a reg.

I put a new regulator on and I can't believe it is charging. First time in about 30 years. Thanks for all the help. Now I have to go disc a couple acres and get some early corn in.

Soundguy, I tested the way you said, I guess it's the regulator. I went to NAPA, it will be here in the morning. Thanks

Well here's what I found out. When I jump neg. to Arm. and neg to field the gen. turns., not real fast but it turns.
When I jump neg. on Battery to field and run engine the amp. gauge shows full discharge. ( like a dead short) Now what? If the Gen. runs it must be the regulator, am I correct in this thinking.

Ok.. it motored.. that's a good sign.

The fact the amp gauge shows backwards may mean you wired it backwards.

Check with a volt meter across the battery witht he amp gauge pegged for a few seconds. I fthe battery shows charge.. then genny is good and battery is miswired.

If it don't show charge otherwise.. but will when you full field it.. the reg field circuit is shot. try touching a testlamp from bat hot to field with reg hooke dup.. if this causes mild charge, that goes to discharge.. when you pull it away.. it is another sign of a bad field circuit in the reg..

Since it spun slowly.. you might be getting ready to need brushes and a mica trim and a comutator polish.. but at least it spun.. that's good.

Use gator clip jumper wires to do all the tests vs dinking with pulling the reg untill you know what is wrong.

Thanks Guys. I've been fighting this problem for years, and decided to get to the bottom of it. The tractor is an 860 gas. The reg. is tough to get at without taking some tin off, so I only want to do this once. I'm gonna attack it today.

On the 6V the Field is the one at 7 or 8 O'Clock, or most out when mounted. And the Ground is the one inboard of that. Two of the last three regulators I have bought were bad. One even wiped out a perfectly good generator, and melted my field wire in my new harness. The other one will work when it wants to, and if you "tap" on the cover. All three were from TSC, so I would recommend getting them elsewhere, and a deferent brand. I may try napa next time.

The reg is listed in the parts section .. I found it looking under an 800 tractor... it is the 3rd from the last item in the link I provided. I am *assuming* you have a 6v gas model.. and not the 12v diesel model. if you have the diesel.. look at the item above the 6v reg.

The 800 used a B circuit genny and regulator. the reg for it is the same from a NAA, or any o fthe gas 6v 00, or 01 series tractors, as well as the 4 cyl 2000 / 4000.

The stud on the end case is the armature.

the 2 small studs on the barrel are field and ground. One of them will have an obvious insulation grommet or phenolic insulating washer at it's base.. the other will be more or less screwed/pressed right to the case.
