I have a 1955 850 with manual steering. I can not find in my manuals what oil is specified for the steering box. I realize that a thicker gear lube is probably best, but I want to know what is supposed to be used. Any help - thanks

I use straight Lucas Oil treatment. Works great!

If I remember right I have a Ford service bulletin from the 60's that changed the recommendation to the "O" grease.

I think I'd put 85/140 in.. you for sure won't hurt it.. and the heavier oil will be easier on weak seals.. some use 0# grease..

My Owner's Manual calls for "extreme pressure gear lubricant SAE 90 in the summer and SAE 80 in the winter". The specifications call for 1.5 pounds in the steering housing. Some tractors will have a hex plug for the filler and others will have a zirk fitting that has been added. You don't want to add grease that is too thick because it will develop a void between the grease and gear, thus not providing much lubrication. A gear lub that will maintain its flowing viscosity is desired.

I added the zerk to my steering box and put in most of a tube of synthetic grease, as suggested some time ago on this board. It steers much better than it did before I put in the grease, which is not supposed to thicken much at low temperature. I had tried 90WT oil, but it leaked out pretty bad. There is some leakage with the grease, but nothing like it was with the oil.

I suppose I should rebuild the steering box sometime, but it steers just fine, now that it has the grease in it. The 641D must be close to 50 years old, and I doubt that anyone has ever been into the steering box. I don't think the box would have lasted a whole lot longer without being lubricated though. Putting in the grease was really easy, quick and cheap. My kind of a repair!

I think I will try 80w-90, then.

Where did you find it in your manual, Glen?
