My 961 is not wanting to start. When iturn the key to the on position, it cranks the engine over without pushing the starter button. Before the began, it would crank without starting. Up until recently it would reliably start. The points are good.

Does anyone know where I should start trouble shooting?

Do you have some kind of boogered up auto ignition / key start switch, instead of the OEM key switch, and big thumb button ont he tranny?

If so.. sounds like you wired it wrong.. or the switch failed.

Gotta post more info when you have questions like this.. especially if you have non standard parts or wireing.

I'm not sure about it having a boogered up auto ignition. It does have a big silver thumb button on top of the tranmission cover though. I haven't rewired anything. It's as it was when I bought it and was reliable until now. Key swithch is mounted on theleft hand side under the back of the hood cowl. You turn the key clockwise one position for the switch to be on before hitting the thumb button.

That's what we needed to know.. if you still use dthe thumb button or not.

OK.. so.. with key on, starter turns over. Sounds like the solenoid is grounde dout.. might be a frayed wire. Disconnectt he small wire from the solenoid and see if this keeps it from cranking when the key is turned on.. if so, trace this wire.. it goes to the thumb switch.. see if the wire is chaffed or frayed.. if so.. it will ground the solenoid just like hitting the thumb switch. if wire is ok, test from the thumb switch screw terminal to ground with an ohm meter.. if it has continuity.. it is bad,... if no ohm meter.. take a test lamp.. hook clip to bat hot, and probe to screw terminal on thumb switch.. if lamp comes on.. switch is bad.. lamp should only be on when switch is depressed..

Once that is fixed, check to make sure you have power to the ignition coil with the key turned on.
