Chris,
I bought a 1962 971 LPG yesterday. The seller stated that the tractor had been sitting unused for many years and I don't doubt that from the condition of the tires. He was able to get the engine started but he couldn't get the SOS to go. I just pulled the top cover and everything inside is rusted! You stated that your SOS had been sitting for several years. Did you find everything rusted up under the top cover of the SOS?
Alan

awhtx, rust ain't good in there. Most are not rusted.
There NOS control valve body assemblies available on eBay from time to time. If you're lucky you can buy one there. Otherwise you have to buy 'em from guys like me, who want to make money on 'em
I do have two or three NOS complete control valve bodies, as well as some other NOS SOS parts. If you're interested in this route, send an email. My email is open on the modern view.

awhtx said: (quoted from post at 15:22:17 04/20/08) I've got the control valve in my shop ready to disassemble. I just haven't had time yet. All 6 of the clutch and band valves are stuck as well as the transmission feathering valve. The PTO feathering valve is the only one that's free.

Can you believe that Soundguy drove about 2500 miles round trip and we didn't even meet each other! I was gone to work when he was here.

Awhtx,

I look forward to hearing what you find and would love seening some photos. I look forward to getting to meet some of the personalities from this site. I did meet and enjoy briley?? I would have to search and check the name for sure, but we met at the National show in Lathrop MO last summer. Best of luck and keep us up to speed.

Awhtx,

I'm afraid I won't be much help. When I parked our 971 knowing it wouldn't likely move I did get it under cover. When I pulled the top plate to change the filter, everything looked good. Larry NCKS and Dean will likely have the best input. I know the control valve assembly can be taken apart and serviced, cleaned. Probably what will be required, but I have no knowlege of how difficult to do. Best of luck, I will follow the post and try to learn. Thanks for the selling the 951 to Soundguy, I'm enjoying his posts, though I am a little jealous of the time he is able to put into his hobby. It's nice to see something change quickly.

Chris
