Hi, I was using my tractor everything seemed fine. Shifted into park and adjusted the rear blade angles got back onto it and shifted to 5th and let out the clutch, no grinding, no motion? Shifted to R1 to see if it would engage nothing....triied all gears no motion and realized that it was'nt coming out of park.....any idea's?

Hi,

Sounds like you either poured the oil in the rear end or the hydraulic section. Neither should affect the transmission oil level. You fill the transmission through the fill/level plug hole, which it sounds as if you found.
Did we establish which 4000 you have? Is it a 3 cyl or 4 cyl?

As to your traction disconnect, you may need to rock the tractor a bit to take the bind off it while you try to engage or disengage it. I would say the ease or disease of its movement, had more to do with torque or lack thereof on the shaft splines than adding more oil.

Now then, to your problem. We've already given about all the possibles. Have you checked any of them out other than the disconnect?

There are only a few things that can cause a transmission to stay in park. Number one suspect is the torque limiting clutch in the flywheel. Once again, does it make any of the normal noises at all as you shift ratios? If not and your oil is up to level and clean you're looking at a front split no matter what the cause is. You might as well figure on getting the oil up to level and if that doesn't do it, prepare for a front split. You should put gauges on the servos and check pressure before splitting it, but my guess is they will show 0 psi. If they show 180 (4 cyl) or 205 (3 cyl) in any gear ratio at 800 rpm, a front split is not indicated.

The only other remote possibility is shift cable/wheel problems. I would not think the cable would be the culprit, since it is a push operation to come out of park. The shifter plate or cam drive wheel, however, could be another matter.

Does it make the usual SOS noises when shifting through the ratios? If not, I'd suspect the troque limiting clutch in the flywheel. If so, then the traction disconnect.
Check to see if you can roll the tractor . If you can, it's the traction disconnect. If it won't roll, likely the torque limiting clutch.

The traction disconnect would probably be the easiest to remedy. It depends on which 4000 you have as to where and how this functions. On the early (4 Cyl.) 4000's the operator is on the left side and requires a nut to be removed to change. If you have this one and your TC is disengaged, likely the eccentric is not in the groove in the sleeve. If you have the later (3 cyl.) 4000, the operator is on the right side and has detents. If you have this one it could have jumped the detents and become disengaged.

If it's the TLC you're looking at a front split to repair it.

Please let us know what you find out

The traction disconnect seems to be working at least when I changed it's position I was able to pull the tractor however, when I put it back into traction position there was no movement when shifted into gear and the traction disconnect lever was super stiff to move between positions. After I checked the fluid level, which was down about 1 1/2 ", and filled it up it was much easier to move. After pouring about 8 litres of THF into the rear axle housing and then running the engine with all plugs and hoses connected, the level really did'nt go up as much as I thought it should....I was expecting fluid to drain out the front transmission check hole when pouring in fluid or after running the engine....did I do this wrong or ?? The traction disconnect got real easy to move after topping up the fluid. All hydrolics work fine...it seems like for whatever reason it just won't come out of park.

Not an expert, but maybe the torque limiting clutch sheared the splines off or the traction coupler came loose.
