I have a Ford 1210 tractor that has started smoking when started. Black smoke out the exhaust. It seems to have lost a little power, not much because is can still mow and till. I have checked the oil a couple of times now, it does not appear to be burning oil.

Looking at some of the other posts about diesels that smoke, it seems like I should check these things. Can you help with what order I should check them in? Also, any other ideas of what to check before I think about a rebuild?

- fuel in the oil
- carb not getting enough air
- air filter is plugged
- rings gunked up
- valve seals gunked up

Thanks,
BillT

They make a lot of smoke for what they are. Most have a horizontal muffler with a front discharge. This is a prefect design for re-circulating the exhaust through the air filter. Change the air filter before you do anything else.

Black smoke on a diesel is unburnt fuel.. I'd check air filter. Could also be overfueling i guess.

if she was pumping oil.. I'd expect to see blue smoke..

Also..diesels don't have 'carbs'

Could this problem be related to glowpugs being bad / not working?

Lack of glow plugs might make it a bit harder to start.. but once started.. the glow plugs don't do anything.

How do I check for and know that I am 'over fueling'?

Possibly valve adjustment on one of those engines?
