With regards to Soundguy for using his "teaser" label and to Jim.UT for his "what's wrong with this tractor" posts which I find interesting and amusing. Last Friday (4/18) I drove to Abilene, TX (150 miles from me) to buy a 1962 971 LPG for parts. I came home on a different highway than I went out on and as I was driving I saw this 801 (the eggcrate grille was obvious) sitting beside the highway amongst several implements, cars, trucks and a couple of old AC tractors. I continued on but after going about a mile I couldn't stand it any longer so I turned around and went back. There was a phone number painted on a piece of wood nailed to a fence post so I assumed the stuff was for sale. I called the number and got no answer so I climbed over the barb wire fence (it as obvious others had done the same) and walked over to the Ford with an 801 grille and an 800 hood emblem to check it out and discovered that it is in fact an 851. Now for the fun part- you guys get to guess what I found. Let your mind run wild with ideas and post here with your thoughts. Soundguy doesn't get to guess because I already told him. More photos will follow over the next several days.

Can you tell me anything about the AC tractors there? Were they for sale too? I need parts for my 39 WC. My workhorse is a Ford 4000, but I'm trying to get my old AC up and running again.

Thanks.

Yes, Yes, Yes, No. It was out of gas. When I went back yesterday the seller put in 1/2 gallon of gas and: Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes!

No, the tank is there but the fuel shutoff valve is afflicted with a serious case of the infamous Ford Fuel Shutoff Valve Leak!

From this photo it looks like a pretty normal 851 to me except for the alternator and the things already mentioned, I'm leaning to Ford Farmers low or high S/N.

Answers to some of the questions raised so far... in reply to awhtx, 04-26-2008 19:00:42
1) They're 28" rims with a 13.6 on the left and a 14.9 on the right- not 24" rims.
2) It had a rotary mower attached to it but I didn't buy that.
3) The black tabs are canopy mounts with a doubler inside the fender. There is also a bracket for a slow moving vehicle triangle and a work light attached to the left fender.
4) That is an ammeter attached to the dash cowl.
5) The rusty iron was just laying around the tractor and is not attached to it.
6) I did buy the 971 LPG and I will be parting it out.

Well, everything I've noticed in the pic has already been mentioned (I was going to guess 12.4x28's, as the left one looks kinda small next to the fender), except it kinda looks like there's something on the air cleaner bowl - a drain? Only other thing that comes to mind is like someone else said - very low (or high) serial number.

Question is did you get the 971 LPG? I sure would like to see a lpg 901 all restored. I have never seen one in these parts. Must have all been sold in TX. Is a real straight looking 851 thow! If it had been sitting out around hear it would be solid rust.

Is all that rusty iron by the left tire and in front of the tractor some machine that is attached to the tractor?

Probably the angle of the picture, but it almost appears to have something mounted on the radius rod? Do we have a guage of some sort mounted were the ignition switch should be? That isn't just a weathered steering wheel ,is it? A rerouted gas line! The black tabs on the fenders are for mounting a buggy type canopy (sun shade). Ya gootta give us some more clues!!LOL

Something just looks ODD about that thing on the PTO. For some reason it does not look like a brush cutter but has a gear box like one.
Might be a drag type cutter rather than a 3 point cutter that makes it look differant.

And what is that mounted on the side of the center cowl. A gauge or what??

Well it's a gas tractor, has a 12v conversion, no PS, no spin out wheels, factory air cleaner, steering wheel, looks like a rotary cutter on the back. What I don't get is what the black tabs are on the front sides of both fenders. Is that what the deal is?

Brian Allen said: My first guess is an 851 GOLD

Good guess, but the only gold tractors were '58 Select-O-Speed models. If you look close, you can see by the shifter that it's indeed a 5-speed.

The first thing I noticed was the 24" rims on the back....but that's nothing particularly special.

My first guess is an 851 GOLD, or 2nd, an early really low numbered model.
