Ford 1710 Question

I am considering buying a Ford 1710 4x4 with loader. I have viewed pictures of the tractor, but not seen the tractor in person yet. Here are my questions: When I look up the 1710, I get a wide range of hp ratings from 21 - 27hp. Did they put different motors in the 1710?

Also, what type of transmission is in it? Gear, shuttle shift, etc? Does the 1710 have power sterring? What is a reasonable price? This individual wants $8000 and that includes a brush hog.

Now there is another Ford for sale, a 1910 that has been restored for $9900.

Which one would be a better buy?

Thanks in advance!

Sometime in the '80's HP rating went from PTO HP
and drawbar HP to "Gross HP" In effect that is
the power right off the flywheel. This tractor
high number would undoubtedly be gross HP. Of
course you can't use that power but it sounds real good. Chuck

It's all about condition and what you want to do with it which is a better deal. I'm not positive, but I believe you could get either "manual" shift or shuttle shift tranny in both of those tractors, so you will have to look at it and see what type of tranny it is. I expect that the engine puts out around 27 hp and the pto rating is around 21 which might explain the disparity you have read. For how I use a tractor, neither are really big enough for me, so I can't tell you which is better. If you are replacing a wheelbarrow with a front loader tractor, both would be fine. If you are planning to do a lot of brush hogging, or bale hay, go for the bigger one, or look for bigger still than either of the ones you mentioned. I'd think that $8k is on the high side of what I would spend on that tractor, but condition will dictate.

It is impossible to determine which is a better buy without a close inspection, and that can be a crapshoot. The 1710 may have power assisted or manual steering. The power assist will require more steering effort than the currently popular hydrostatic power steering. The varying HP ratings probably reference engine and PTO horsepower respectively. All 1710's had the same engine, but all internet data do not share the same accuracy.
