This weekend I plowed about two acres of ground that had laid fallow for more than five years with a Ford 850. It is a heavier clay loam soil. I used a three bottom Ford 101 plow that I converted to two bottom and ran in 2nd gear. It pulled rather hard (all of it was some form of sod, weed or grass), especially through the small trees that have grown! In four hours I burned about 6 or 6.5 gallons of fuel.
What are your experiences with gas hourage on the 850? How about an 840?

How might you have attacked this kind of ground? (I am going to plant corn and sunflowers with a shoe planter)

You should probably apply to Guiness for a world record on that fuel economy. Our 860 would burn 2-2.5 gph regardless of what it was doing.
I'd be quite happy with that considering what those engines can burn...

Don't forget that it is also a rather primitive carburetor on that tractor. It was hardly cutting edge in the '50's! If you were to mount a modern port fuel injection system on it with O2 sensors and all that rot, the fuel consumption would probably drop by 1/4 to 1/3!

Diesels in the 801 series tractors would be about 2/3 or less the consumption of the gas tractors.

Still, imagine the amount of hay and oats it would take if you had to use a team of horses!

The 8xx are pretty hungry machines. Keep in mind that you are making almost 50hp.

I have an 850 that I use for loader work.. it can burn a gallon an hour doing that no problem.. so your 6.5g / 4hrs of plowing don't seem too bad.

My 70hp ford 5000 pulling a 10' mower will use 5g of diesel in 3hrs, and my 95~ hp 7610s will burn 5g of diesel in 2hrs pulling a 15' mower.
