Bought a Ford 3000 with transmission pto. The engine clutch works fine but when you want to engage the pto, it will not engage with without grinding it into gear. Need suggestions on where to start for a fix.

Just make sure you are pushing the clutch down far enough. On the double clutch there are 2 holes for the clutch pedal to be hooked in. the pedal ends up being up very high when hooked up right. You should feel the first clutch and then feel the second stage about 1/2 or 3/4 of the way down. If you are not then that may be the problem.

I think that you will find that the tractor has a double clutch and the pto clutch is stuck. I had this an a 1310 ford that I bought new and didn't use much. After a few years I couldn't engage the power take off without shutting off the engine. Had to split the tractor and take off the clutch and clean all the parts. It was easy to see what was wrong when it was apart. The clutch has very close tolerances and rust takes up all of this. A good winter job.

I think that is pretty much normal.. especially with a trans pto.. when the engine is spinning..and the pto is not.... grind....
