I currently have a 5000 SOS and want (need) to convert to manual. Is this easily done?? Besides the Tranny itself, what else need to be changed with it. Thanks

You might like to save this link for trouble shooting these transmissions.

Larry NCKS, I can"t thank you enough !!!!!
As usual you"re right on the money. Adjusted B3 and got the rest of the gears. Mechanic came to fine tune via service manual.. I now have the SOS going again with out any additional cost " Tranny replacement".. Thanks again for your interest experience and help..

Tell your mechanic to look closely at B3 (band 3) and it's circuitry. This is a mechanically applied and hydraulically released application. From across the pond, I'm going to guess one of two things has happened. Either the B3 valve spool is sticking in the valve body or the band itself is misadjusted or improperly installed. If the mechanic is certain he's got B3 adjusted correctly, I'm going to bet on a sticky valve spool.

This fix should be way cheaper than a tranny swap. The 5000 SOS is generally a good unit and is as bullet proof as they come.

Larry,
Ford 5000 man bring between 7,500 - 11,000 $Aud.
I have today investigated a so called "coversion kit" ( which appears to be everything from the Flywheel back (not including wheels/ guards etc external)sell for approx $4,400 Aud inc tax.
This being about half the cost of a possible replacement tractor of about the same caliber.
I am considering this option, as the engine / body etc of my existing tractor are in quite good condition. Thanks for your interest. Regards Aussie :-)

On a 5000, should just need tranny, flywheel/clutch, clutch pedal and linkage, I think.

The ground speeds are nearly beyond reason after a tranny-only swap due to the different ring & pinion.

yep, you're right... just compared ratios on the NH site.... 1.67:1 vs. 4.11:1 up to more than 6:1 for 8-speeds, depending on tire size, I suppose. Would make for quick road time!

might be easier and more feasible economically to swap tractors. What is wrong with your SOS, if I may?

G'day Larry, Original problem as listed in previous forum 10/5/07 . "Just stopped". I finally was able to get some one to look at it and have had a failed pump replaced (secondhand) and tranny re fitted. Mechanic has adjusted the bands and done pressure test, Still only getting very low pressure and only picking up gears 5 to 10, no reverse. Mechanic is at a loss so I am looking at any alternatives. As with everywhere else SOS does not have a good reputation in Australia either!! Thanks
