Hi there. I have a Ford 340 Industrial. Is the tranny and diff fluid common? There is a filler cap behind the seat for the rear end, but no way to check? There's a filler cap and dipstick by the shifters as well.

Are there two separate sumps? Where are the drain plugs?

Thanks in advance.

By the way, went to the dealer today. He said the tranny and rear-end are common. There are two drains because of a web between the two.

(Doesn't explain why two filler caps though.)

I tried the PTO yesterday - definitely independant. Pull the lever and she starts spinning...

About the plugs, I got that info right from the manual maybe they messed up. If I get a chance to check mine (I don't keep it at my house). I'll check for the location. Good Luck

There are 3 different types of PTO. 1st: Live PTO meaning that you depress the clutch about halfway down and the tractor stops but the PTO continues to run, depress the clutch all the way and the PTO stops. 2nd: Transmission PTO depress the clutch, the tractor and PTO both stop will stop (no halfway on the clutch). 3rd: Independent PTO depressing the clutch will not stop the PTO, you must move the lever sharply in and out, thus it's independent. It can be engaged or disengaged while tractor is moving or stopped. I bought the operator manual on ebay it's got a lot of info in it. Good Luck

The 3 point hydro draws from the rear.

Might be a little late, but I have my operator manual with me now. Rear axle cap. with independent PTO is 48.3 qts. without independent PTO is 33.9 qts. Trans 6x4 or 8 speed is 12.7 qts. There are 2 square head plugs on the rear next to the heel of your right foot as you sit on the tractor, the highest one is the level plug for independent PTO and the lower one is without independent PTO. Hope this helps, let me know how you make out.

Where does the hydraulic for the 3point draw from? The rear end?

Any ideas on quantities for a change for both?

I also have a 340B tractor - and have been searching high and low for the bottom line on fluids. Have gotten several different answers from different dealers. Just yesterday was told to use NH Ambra 134D in everything but the engine (power steering, tranny, rear end, tractor hydraulics, loader hydraulics)- interesting in that my tractor has the 6x4 manual transmission. Loader (745) Manual specs the loader fluid as M2C48A. The "A" is waht has confused me. Many "universal hydraulic fluids lists they will subsitiute for M2C48B.... I hope this help - I remain somewhat confused - I thought there would be a easy weblink that "cross referenced" fluids--- if there is, I cant locate it

I have a 340 ind. also. The trans is seperate from the diff. I just recently drained & refilled my trans. What came out looked like vanilla milkshake due to water seeping in around the shifter levers. I let it drain for days with the fill cap and plug out to let it dry out as much as possible. The plug is directly under the trans (shifter levers). I used 134G fluid recommended from the NH dealer. I haven't touched the diff yet.
