I recently purchased what I believe to be an 861 Diesel, but I cannot read the serial numbers on the transmission (above the starter) due to rust pitting. Are the serial numbers stamped anywhere else on the tractor? Thanks

No the serial # is only in the placed you looked.
Look at the pictures in the link and we may beable to date it by the parts date codes.

Hello John;

Where can a fellow get a data sheet that breaks down the date codes? Thanks!

There are no other "serial numbers" but there are casting numbers and date codes. If you think you have an 861, then you have the following:

8=four wheel utility type with adjustable front axle, 172 ci gas, Lp-gas, or 172 ci Diesel engine
6 = 5 speed tranny, 3 point system and live PTO
1 = 01 series tarctor

The exception would be any thing that may have been changed by repair, ie different tranny etc, or was added by the dealer or others. Hope this helps.

It's definitely an 861 Diesel. The previous owner repainted the tractor blue and installed 4000 series diesel decals and a 800 series nose emblem. I would like to paint it the original colors and need to identify the vintage to ensure the correct shade of red.

thanks for all the help... I will look for some date codes.

The diesel engine was not available until the 01 series was introduced as the 1958 model and all 01's were painted the orange-red color so therefore orange-red is the correct color for your tractor.
