How do I charge an 8 Volt battery?

With an 8 volt battery charger of course!

The Gold Demo I bought Thursday has an 8 volt battery from TSC that was made in Nov, 2002 but has never been connected- it still has the plastic protector caps on the posts. I checked the electrolyte level and it was low so I filled them up. My battery charger is a 6V-12V unit so how do I charge this 8V battery? Will 12V at 2 amps hurt the battery?

I use a 12 VOLT 1 Amp trickle charger and it works just fine to leave on for extended periods.

Update on the battery..... in reply to awhtx, 05-18-2008 07:04:48
I set the charger on 6V and went to church, ate lunch, etc, etc. The charger was on for about 4 hours. When I checked the voltage it showed 9V so I set the charger on 12V, 2A for about 2 minutes and it came up to 10V so I shut it off and put the battery in the tractor. I had previously pulled all of the plugs and filled the cylinders with ATF. I pulled on the fan and the crank turned! It had been sitting for 5 years but it wasn't frozen.
The wiring has been southern engineered under the instrument panel so I checked voltage at the starter relay, the junction block and the coil and all have at least 6V and the one headlight works! However, depressing the starter button did nothing so I unhooked the starter cable from the relay and held it to the post with the negative battery cable. It sparked and that was all so I pulled the cable off the starter and cleaned it up. Then I removed the starter hold down bolts to clean the mating surfaces between the starter and the engine and I noiced that some yahoo had previously replaced the starter and he installed the choke rod support bracket between the starter housing and the engine block! I got it all cleaned up, bolted back together correctly and touched the starter cable to the battery post and it turned over! Now to sort through that rat's nest of a wiring harness and figure it out so the starter button will function.
Also, as I was working around the tractor I saw lots more gold paint- the air filter housing, the rear axle gear boxes and the grille are especially prominent where the blue paint is peeling. I think a good pressure wash job will reveal a whole lot of gold paint.
And Soundguy- I'm going to pick up those diodes the next time I pass a Radio Shack and build that resistor you describe so I can set the charger on 12V and not worry about it.

Hi, you sure made out when you bought that tractor & then found out it was a Gold Demo . Now as far as the 8v battery , I was told by a battery dhop to use a 6v charger , let it trickle charge for about an hour & then hit it with 12v for a few minutes than disconnect . It works for me . The 8v batt will give you a faster starting & brighter lights . I've run an 8v in my 640 since 2000 & have only burnt out one headlight bulb . My first 8v lasted over 5 yrs before having to replace it . Be sure you take the cables off & clean all connection points shiny & brite . I also recommend smearing some dielectric grease on all the connection points plus battery posts . HTH ! God bless, Ken

Do you have a 12v cahrger that will do 1.5 or 2a on the trickle setting? If so, hit radio shack and pick up a single 25-pack of 'assorted' silicon rectifier diodes. solder or crimp 6 in series, then do another 6.. parallel those..then put that in line with your 12v charger. make sure you lay them out so that the stripes all face the same end. connect ground clamp to battery ground, and positive clamp to the end of the diode array with no stripe.. connect the other end of the array to the positive battery post. this is a cheap and dirty 1-st year high school electronics regulator project. The diodes will set you back about 3$.. but you can safely charge up an 8v battery on this setup...

if your charger is 3a trickle, then do another 6 and parallel those.. if 4a, then another 6 and parallel those.. that will use 24 of your 25 diodes. the pack costs a couple bucks and is radio shack part number 276-1653

Other option is to find a cig lighter adapter that drops 12v in a car down to 9v.. or find an old wall wart that has a DC output of 9v.. ( or an ac 9v output.. then use 4 diodes to build a full wave bridge. then add gator clips after cutting off it's plug.. that will give you a trickle charger.. etc.

Im going back 40 50 years here. When a low battery pinned a charger I put some # 18 zip cord in one charger lead about 3 feet. The voltage drop fixed it.Battery charger terminals are always crimped on.Fast and cheap. If there is any heat in the connection while charging you have voltage drop.Solder the connection on new chargers. After acid fumes are working on the joint its hard to solder them. The new chargers built with out a trans former are crap, they put a surface charge on a battery and shut down long before the battery is really charged.Friend bought one,I found it shut down when the the battery was at half charge.I use a hydrometer to check charge state.Copper clamps are best if you replace rusty clamps, dont be fooled by copper plate.Use a magnet to make sure.

You can use your 12volt charger and a digital voltmeter. When the charge voltage gets to 10 volts, quit.
Use a common charger somewhere in the 5-15 amp range. Don't use a humongous 50-200amp charger.

A battery charger puts out dirty dc that will confuse a digital meter.

Sorry Alan,

I should know better as awhtx starts with an A. I prefer first names, congrats on your new find. I really enjoy running my 971 and hope you enjoy your new tractor. Thanks for selling Soundguy the 951, he really went to town on it. Have a great morning, we're off to church.

Chris

I'm Alan, not that it matters.
I found the tractor on the Waco Craigslist. Here's a link to my original post regarding it's acquisition.

[quote="awhtx"](quoted from post at 09:04:48 05/18/08) With an 8 volt battery charger of course!

Good Morning Jerry,

I run an 8 volt on my 971 and when I charge it I use the 6V setting on an older trickle charger. Puts 8V on it fine. My genny was acting up Friday night after about 40 minutes of brush cutting, hoping to solve the problem by cleaning up connections. :D

I would only use the 6V charge setting. Where did you get your gold demo.
