HI Guys - Just purchased an old Ford Tractor and am trying to ID what I have. The serial number has been eaten off by battery acid, so no hope there. It has a diesel engine. The guy I bought it from said it was an early 60's 40hp tractor..but not sure. There's a date code on the Txm of 85M, which from my research means Dec 5, 1958. 310837 was under that. It's a 5 speed up/down tranny. The number on the intake manifold is 310659, exhaust manifold - 310660 (or 680), NDA-7723-C on cap on transmission, and on the right side of engine 310609 with a 2 under it.

The guy told me it was an 801 or so model, but he wasn't sure.

The front grill has straight slats (no honeycomb), which tells me it either a 601 series or 800 series. But, I am not sure the deisel came out with the 800, I can't find that info to confirm. So, I'm leaning toward a 651, but this contradicts what I was told.. not that it discredits the facts. Thanks for looking and for the help.

Sounds like you have a 1959 851 or 861.
The 851 has a single clutch disc and the 861 has a duel clutch disc giving it live PTO.

The date code on the radiator is the most help as it was usually built just prior to the tractor being built.

Here is a link to other date codes on the tractor.

What's the casting mumger on the engine block? It will be just below the dipstick or just below the injector pump. Also measure the diameter of the axle housing where it bolts to the center housing. With this information we should be able to determine what you have.

Engine number is 310609, with a 2 underneath that number - this is the one just below the injector pump. The tractor is not with me, so I'll have to get the axle measurements. Thanks for your reply.

310609 is the code for the 172 cu in engine, gas or diesel. It appears that you have a 1958 851 or 861 Diesel. Have you determined if it has live PTO (861) or not (851)?
Get the date codes off your axle housings, block,
transmission, and lift cover and we'll determine if all the date codes are in the same range.

Thanks - I will pull the codes soon, maybe this weekend. Wouldn't the grill be different if it was an 801 series? I read it should have the Honeycomb type grill instead of what I have. I guess that could always be swapped out I guess... Anyway to determine PTO type without cranking it?

801 should have the "eggcrate" grille but those are easily changed.
To determine if it has the dual stage clutch for Live PTO make sure the clevis at the end of the clutch rod is in the aft hole which will cause the clutch pedal to be nearly straight up. Engage the PTO lever by your left heel. Depress the clutch pedal half way (releasing the transmission clutch) and you should not be able to turn the PTO shaft by hand. Now press the clutch pedal all the way down (releasing the PTO clutch) and the PTO shaft should turn by hand.

 Correction- it's a 1959 model in reply to awhtx, 05-18-2008 19:43:48
If the trans was built in Dec, 1958 it's 1959 model tractor.
