I happened to read from one of the forums on the ytmag site about ice in the fuel filters and decided to check out my 1979 Ford 445 TLB.
I usually change the filters in the spring to be ready for summer. I will now change fuel filters in the fall. I found a chunk of ice in the fuel filter the size of a donut!. I surmise given the quality of fuel today and other variables it is a wonder that more fuel filter assemblies are not frozen and cracked or damaged the filter housing. This is East Tennessee mountains and I can only guess what the winter conditions are in more northern climes.
I am now a believer.

You could use a diesel additive. Most have water dispersants and anti-gel ingredients. Summer blend #2 can gel even in the balmy south. It's also good to keep fuel containers in well-sealed cans or bulk drums tilted so water collects away from the valve. Keeping the tractor's tank topped up during the winter also minimizes water that gets into the fuel from condensation. It’s not uncommon to get colder than -25F here, and I've never had a problem with water or ice in the diesel.
