I have oil in the radiator water. Do I need to replace the head gasket?

An aftermarket supplier, A&I, has replacemant radiators for many Ford applications, maybe yours. I'm thinking the oil cooler in the bottom tank of your radiator has failed. Pull the cooler lines from the radiator, pressurize the cooling system, see if colant runs out of the oil fittings on the radiator. If this is the problem, don't forget to check to see if antifreeze has entered the transmision.

Hey Ron I had a JD crawler with this same problem a while back and per my customers request I removed cylinder head, found absolutely nothing wrong with the head or gasket (did need a engine rebuild tho lol) then after I had shown him this I got to try my idea (that I had in the first place I might add) I removed the engine oil cooler had it tested, nothing, then got to looking this particular model has a transmission cooler integrated on the radiator uses coolant to cool tranny oil (much like passenger cars) this is where I found my problem it wasn't engine oil in the coolant it was trans. oil, in my 15+ yrs of mechanicin' i've never saw a head gasket allow engine oil into the coolant now the other way around i've saw alot, so anyway the jist of this would be to look for something else (oil coolers) if the oil is not mixing the other way (coolant into engine oil) I wouldn't think it would be a head problem either.

First, double check to make sure that you do indeed have engine oil in the radiator. Sometimes the anti-freeze, which is oil based, has been in for many years and starts to break down and leave a black residue that looks like engine oil. Then if it's truly engine oil, check the radiator when it's running to see if there are any bubbles in the coolant. If so, yep, probably a head gasket. If not, and you can't see any head gasket leaks and the engine is running OK, then there has to be a crack in the block somewhere. But that would also tend to leak coolant into the engine oil, which would make the engine oil look milky color. My $.02
