My 1962 Ford 641 has recently began killing batteries. I replaced the 6v battery and it ran for a little while, then when I shut it off, it never restarted. It was a brand new battery. It just clicks when I push the start button. Any ideas?

I have a 1963 641 that done the same thing a few years back...I bought a new batter, voltage regulator and had the generator tested.....What finally cured it was I rewired everything from the regulator to selenoid and to the starter and generator...cured the problem and didn't take long at all

Forgive my ingnorance, but what grade of wire do I need? What obstacles might I run into changing out the wires?

I used 12 ga. wire. I also had a wiring diagram which is handy to have . As far as problems I had none. Might be handy to have a diagram so that you can trace each line out. If you don't ,let me know and I'll direct you as to where you can find one. Again, it itsn't hard. Just take your time and look how the old wire went.

You can do it..... good luck

I can not tell by your description so I will give two answers.

1) It starts with a new battery but after using will not restart.
It is not charging; Or your starter is weak and will not work when it gets hot. Once you get it started it should still run even if you take the positive battery cable off battery. If it kills it was running on battery and is not charging.

2) It starts with a new battery but will not start if you let it sit over night.
You have a dead short some where draining battery. If you have a 6v test light take the positive battery cable loose. Install the test light between the battery post and the battery wire. If you have a short the light will come on. Start removing stuff till the light goes out. You have then found your short.

Well, I found the problem. Thanks for all of the advice and rapid responses. Turns out the reason my battery was dead...get this...I killed it. I would flood out the tractor and keep trying to start it unitl I killed the battery. the large needle on my carburetor must have backed off a little. I realized that I needed to make some kind of adjustment to the carburetor when I noticed it was dripping gas! I replaced the battery, started the tractor (it was running terrible). Then, I adjusted the carburetor and I haven't had another problem. I guess the moral of the story is: a problem can look electrical even if it is a fuel problem. Thanks again for all the help.
