I recently bought a 4000 series tractor. I THOUGHT it was a good buy. I was told it is a 4200 model with a select-o-speed tranny and front loader. So far it runs well with the exception of the pto always running. Can someone tell me what I need to do to insure that the select-o-speed tranny continues to run well and what I need to do to turn the pto off? This is a pretty good size machine! Any advice anyone can give me on taking care of this would be MUCH appreciated!!!

Thank

i have the same tractor with the same problem. it has been in my family for years and we've never had any serious problems. however, like you said, the pto can never fully be turned off, and we've had several people look at it. other than a few minor adjustments, select-o-speed hasnt given us much trouble though...good luck, and dont worry its not that bad of a machine

I inherited my dads 4000 Selectospeed so I grew up with it . When I got It there were over 5400 Hrs on a broken Hr Meter so I know it had a bunch of hard Hrs on it . As far As the trans Keeping clean Fluid in it is the most important thing and always cking for proper fluid levels . Ive Heard alot of Horror stories about This Trans. HOWEVER!!!! Growing up with this tractor I can say we never had trouble with ours "Knock on wood" I also worked At A Ford Dealer In Spencer Ia for about 2 yrs After I got out of Av. School in Tulsa and dont recall much trouble with them then AS LONG AS FLUID WAS CHANGED AND KEPT AT THE PROPER OPERATING LEVEL. Dad Used this tractor to farm from Discing to Running a mounted Corn Picker Every Fall from 1964 to 1985 when he retired . It wasnt his "Big Horse " that was a Farmall 856 but it got its share of work . As I said I now have the tractor and I Have totally O/H eng. And trans(only the trans because I Had The Engine Torn Down And I wanted to do it all at one time) It now runs like a top But we only live on 5 Ac. Here in Texas .We do have a plow ,disk, Blade, bush hog , and use for all around work ( My wife is having a Garden this year I guess shes getting ready for Y2K!!!!!) Rick S Wylie Tx.
