4000 PTO problem?

I recently bought a '63 4000 and today while getting ready for the snow, was checking out the PTO. When you engage the PTO, it can be done without the clutch being depressed (at low RPM) and does not stop when the clutch is depressed, everything else on the tractor works great. Any idea what the problem is? Thanks in advance.

Kevin,

There is a clevis that attaches the clutch linkage rod to the clutch arm which has two holes to use. If the pin is in the front hole, the tractor will behave as you describe. If you put the pin in the back hole, the double clutch should work.

Good luck & hope this helps,
Tommy D.

Thanks Tommy, I tried that last night, and while it did make the clutch ride about 3 inches higher, the result was the same. It was suggested to me that the PTO will stop w/ clutch depresed if it has some load on it. Also, should it be nessesary to depress the clutch to engage the PTO? I can engage this one at low rpm's without depressing it no problem. Thanks for the help, Kevin

If you have the 5 speed transmission and double clutch then the PTO should stop when you put the clutch all the way in. I once had a similar problem on a '56 860, and the upshot was that the clutch finger adjusting screws had been eaten by the throwout bearing. I had to replace the clutch, throwout bearing and pilot bearing.

You might be able to see what is going on by removing the four bolts from the small access panel under the clutch housing.

Your pto should stop when you have your clutch pedal pushed all the way down whether or not you have live pto. If it does not stop you have a clutch problem. What transmission do you have, a 4 speed, 5 speed or select-o-speed?

You have Live power on this tractor it will stop if you shift it out with the lever UNLESS!!! you have select o speed Trans then it really never stops unless it has a little load on it BUT!!!! you will love it when you need constant power and you have to slow the ground speed down like when you are mowing or bush hogging Rick S.

I've got a 3000 with the same problem. If it has live power it should stop when you depress the clutch. Go to page 6 of this forum and read the posts about live pto problem. Also a lot of posts on the machinery forum. It's probably either stuck or worn out. Good Luck, Festus
