I have an 851 that jumps out of 3rd gear when under a load. Ive replaced the ball and springs that hold the shifter in with no luck. This is a five speed and 3rd is on top. Any suggestions

working on the detent won't stop it from jumping out of 3rd. The only thing that will cure it is taking the worn gears and couplings out and replacing them with new. Been there and done that. This is true of any transmission that jumps out of gear either under load or on decelerating.

Did you replace all of the interlock plungers and springs (there are 4 sets, one per shift rail as well as the shifter itself)? One poster (last month?) said the problem with his 5-speed was slop between the gears, and he said that shimming everything tight fixed it. Another possibility is that one of the gears or couplers is damaged.

In any event, you will probably need a shop manual. I like the Ford reprint manual a lot better than the I&T manual, but I know a professional mechanic who disagrees.
