Exhaust pipe info needed for my 1955 Ford 850

I am tired of replacing the cheap vertical exhaust pipe, muffler, and the round manifold gasket on my tractor every other year. My exhaust runs horizontal toward the front of the tractor and then out and straight up to a muffler. I guess it can not go down and under because it has a tube style loader and a backhoe. What happens is the pipe and muffler are cheap metal that rusts quickly. Also the weight of the muffler makes the exhaust bounce as you are running it and eventually makes the round gasket leak at the cast iron flange.

I noticed that some tractors have a really thick-wall vertical exhaust pipe on them that seem to last a long time. But I am not sure what muffler can be used: vertical or horizontal. If a horizontal muffler was used, are there provisions to support the end of the muffler opposite the cast manifold flange? Or can a good vertical muffler be used and still support the pipe at the front?

Where can these parts be bought?
Thank You, Mike

Check my web site: www.burthudson.com/tractors, and check out the 661 workmaster. Its has factory exhaust (vert.pipr) and horiz. muffler. We buy it from NH dealer at reasonable price. If not properly supported, the manifold will soon break!!! BURT.

Apekim,
My 850 with Lord Loader & backhoe has the standard under tractor Ford exaust system mounted and the tubular frame doesn't interfere with its installation. I am not affected by an exaust problem. Don

Though not certain I believe that the original epuipment rear exhaust, though expensive, should clear the loader/backhoe. Do not know if Asphyxiation might be a problem for the backhoe operator. I use this low exhaust on my 55 860 because I routinely mow under low hanging tree limbs. Alternatively, use the original equipment manifold mounted-muffler with vertical pipe (pipe only). This arrangement was original equipment on later model 801 series tractors, has little above-hood mass, and should hold up well. My NH low exhaust has been on for nearly 10 years and shows no signs of need for replacement.

From your description your muffler is in the pipe above the hood.

You need to put the muffler between the manifold and the turn up so you can brace it on the motor. The only thing sticking above the hood should be the pipe and rain cap.

Went to a muffler shop (with the tractor) and they made me a custom pipe from the muffler, down in front of the alt, and out the back for $40. Used the alum coated steel pipe.
