3000 -- really live PTO

What's the fix for a live PTO that does not disengage when the clutch is pushed all the way down, on a '72 3000? Is this a big and ugly replacement job or is there an adjustment (linkage has nothing to adjust except a free play adjustment--no help)
Thanks.

Tom, Rick B. has 3 good points, but may I add one more. An early 3000 with a double clutch does have an adjustment on the cross shaft arm to alter the effective clutch pedal stroke. If the stop bolt was adjusted for a "low" pedal height, then there would not be enough travel to disengage the 2nd stage of the double clutch. The reason this adjustment was provided was for those people who never used the PTO, they could adjust the pedal to a lower posistion and thereby not have to lift their leg so high when they wanted to step on the pedal. As it is, if you want to disengage both stages, it requires a fair amount of clutch pedal travel. I know you said you had a '72 tractor, but it's possible that an older tranny has been installed. If this is in fact the problem, it would be the easiest of the 4 fixes. One more point, this adjustment was also how you adjusted the free play. Clevis had two holes in it. One for PTO operation, one for non-PTO use.

There are 3 common causes for your symptoms. 1 The main trans disc is worn & external linkage worn so PTO disc is not being released.
2 The PTO disc is stuck, warped, or otherwise damaged.
3 The pressure plate links that release the PTO disc are broken, preventing the second stage from releasing. All scenarios will require the tractor be split, unless you are able to "unstick" a stuck disc, if that is your problem. Look at the linkage rod, if the clevis is screwed nearly all the way onto the threads, the main disc is thin.
